CLAIRE BOGAARD – Honorary Chairperson

Claire Bogaard is quintessentially Pasadena.  In addition to serving as its First Lady for many years, Claire founded Pasadena Heritage in 1976, joining with others to save Old Pasadena, the Colorado Street Bridge, the Pasadena Playhouse, the Civic Center, including City Hall, and important historic structures and neighborhoods across the city.  Claire served on the Pasadena Planning Commission and is a supporter and advocate of affordable housing and homeless services. She served as Executive Director of Pasadena Heritage, as an Advisor and Trustee for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as Vice Chair of the State Historical Resources Commission and on the Boards of the Pasadena Central Improvement Association, California Preservation Foundation and Heritage Housing Partners.

 PEGGY PHELPS,  The Heritage Award

Peggy Phelps has been a force for good in the Pasadena community for over 50 years.  Peggy came to Pasadena in 1957 from the Chicago area with her husband and three children and soon became active in community and art organizations.  Peggy served as President of the Pasadena Community Foundation, the Pasadena Art Alliance, and the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra and on the Boards of the Pasadena Art Museum, the Armory Center for the Arts, Foothill Family Services, and the Co-Chair and Founder of the Pasadena Fellows of Contemporary Art.  Peggy also was President of the Pasadena YWCA, served on the Pasadena Arts Commission, as Community Council Co-Chair of the Art Center College of Design, and is emeritus trustee of the Claremont Graduate University.  Peggy was the impetus behind the Mayor of Pasadena’s “Up and Moving” to help combat obesity.  Working with All Saints Episcopal Church, she was Founding Board President of the AIDS Service Center; Peggy also has served throughout the years in various leadership roles at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena.

MARGARET SEDENQUIST – Trailblazer Award

A trailblazer in every sense of the word, Margaret Sedenquist is a pioneer American businesswoman, entrepreneur, and veteran community activist.  She is president of Mohawk Property Management Corporation in Pasadena and is former President of Sedenquist-Fraser Enterprises that owned and operated a plastics factory.  Margaret founded the Commercial Pacific Bank in Santa Cruz and is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of La Verne University.

She formerly served as Board President of the Pasadena Playhouse and the YWCA, as the Board Chairperson of Five Acres and the Pasadena POPS Orchestra, and in leadership roles at All Saints Church in Pasadena.  She is founding Board Chair of the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra and Founding Director of the Foothill Apartment Association.  Margaret served as President of the Pasadena Board of Realtors, of the Society of Exchange Counselors, and of the Los Angeles County Boards of Real Estate.  She also served as Chairperson of the Pasadena Finance Committee for City Hall Restoration and as a member of the Pasadena Endowment Advisory Committee and the Water Reclamation Task Force.  Margaret grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming and received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Wyoming.

BETTY ANN JANSSON - The Accolade Award

Betty Ann Jansson richly deserves Women At Work’s Accolade Award. Betty Ann, along with Marge Leighton and Barbara Burke, founded Women At Work in 1979 and from 1985 – 2005 served as its first Executive Director.  During that time, she played a major role in growing the organization to serve over 3,000 women per year with a budget of $700,000 and a staff of fifteen.

Prior to that, she was a Partner in Pasadena Urban Research Consultants that performed program evaluations for social service agencies and conducted surveys for the City of Pasadena in housing and economic development.  In the 1960s, she was a social worker in Philadelphia and a Community Development Worker, Tanzanian Government, East Africa for the American Friends Service Committee.  Currently, Betty Ann serves as the Treasurer for the National Women’s Political Caucus of Greater Pasadena, and as a Corporation Board Member of the American Friends Service Committee.  Betty Ann is an active member of the League of Women Voters and The Pasadena Village.
