Melinda has been serving clients as a Senior VP in the Financial Service Industry for over 30 years.  While she has been a generous contributor to Women At Work over the years, she joined the Board in April 2012 to be able to add her efforts to our mission. Melinda serves on the Technology Committee.  She is married to Chuck since 1984, and they have two children– Matthew and Ashley.  Melinda and Chuck enjoy entertaining, traveling and scuba-diving.

Vera Teller is currently on staff at California State University Dominguez Hills as a Lecturer in the College of Business Administration and Public Policy.  Her professional career spans over 25 years’ experience in business, management, and information systems as Director of Systems and Programming for Safeway (Vons) and Trader Joe’s, consultant for EDS, and Program Manager for WellPoint.

Vera holds a Ph.D. and MA from the Fielding Graduate University in Human and Organization Development, an MBA from California State University, Los Angeles, specializing in business information systems and has certification from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in data communications, microcomputer and LAN support.  She is PMI certified since 2000.

Vera’s interest in career advancement opportunities in the information technology (IT) field is based on personal and professional experience.  She extensively researched networks and their impact on women’s careers. She has been a speaker for Pasadena Community TV Channel 56 on unemployment issues.  She also spoke at the Project Management Institute chapter conferences, Business Analysts conference, Los Angeles Quality Assurance conference, and Chinese American IT conference on societal factors that created barriers to women advancing in the work- place.

Vera serves on the Executive Committee as Secretary for Women At Work; a non-profit organization helping all people reach their full employment and earnings potential.  Vera wrote and managed the strategic planning process for 2011 – 2014.

Marsha Rood

Principal, Urban Reinventions

Marsha Rood served as the City of Pasadena’s Development Administrator from 1982 – 2000, and was responsible for a nationally recognized program of redevelopment and economic revitalization for Downtown Pasadena. She more recently served as the Community Development Director of the City of Culver City and principal of her own company, Urban Reinventions. Ms. Rood was the recipient of the International Downtown Association’s Downtown Achievement Award, the first National Main Street Centers’ Great American Main Street Award, and the Local Government Commission’s Livable Community Award for Old Pasadena.  Ms. Rood is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and is a graduate of Stanford University and USC.

As part of her community work, Ms. Rood founded the Downtown Pasadena Neighborhood Association, is President of the Los Angeles Region Planning History Group, a Deacon of the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, a member of Pasadena Rotary Club, and of various revitalization committees for the Playhouse District and Old Pasadena.

Maggie Whelan

Principal, Urban Reinventions

Margaret Whelan served for 14 years as General Manager of the Los Angeles City Personnel Department and retired in June of 2014.  Originally appointed by Mayor Richard Riordan, she was reappointed by Mayors Hahn, Villaraigosa and Garcetti to manage and administer the City’s civil service system and the City’s Workers’ Compensation, Employee Benefits, and Deferred Compensation programs.  She led a workforce of 500 employees providing human resource services to 50,000 city employees.

In addition to participating in a number of professional organizations, she is an active member of the International Public Management Association for Human Resources where she served on the Executive Board for 6 years and was elected President in 2010.  During her tenure as president, she represented the organization throughout the United States as well as in London, Beijing, Ottawa, and Dubai.  Ms. Whelan has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from California State University at Los Angeles.

She has served as a volunteer in a number of organizations including the Selective Service Board, Girl Scouts of America, and the Alhambra Parks and Recreation Board.  She and her husband, Tom, are long term residents of Alhambra, California.
